Let me tell you a thing, about an amazing man named Patrick Stewart

I went to Comicpalooza this weekend and I was full of nervous energy as I was standing in line to ask Sir Patrick Stewart a question at his panel. I first had to thank him for a speech he had given at amnesty international about domestic violence towards women . I had only seen it a few months ago but I was still dealing with my own personal experience with a similar issue, and I didn’t know what to call it. After seeing Patrick talk so personally about it I finally was able to correctly call it abuse, in my case sexual abuse that was going to quickly turn into physical abuse as well. I didn’t feel guilty or disgusting anymore. I finally didn’t feel responsible for the abuse that was put upon me. I was finally able to start my healing process and to put that part of my life behind me.

After thanking him I asked him “Besides acting, what are you most proud of that you have done in you life (that you are willing to share with us)?”. Sir Patrick told us about how he couldn’t protect his mother from abuse in his household growing up and so in her name works with an organization called Refuge for safe houses for women and children to escape from abusive house holds. Sir Patrick Stewart learned only last year that his father had actually been suffering from PTSD after he returned from the military and was never properly treated. In his father’s name he works with an organization called Combat Stress to help those soldiers who are suffering from PTSD.

They were about to move onto the next question when Sir Patrick looked at me and asked me “My Dear, are you okay?” I said yes, and that I was finally able to move on from that part of my life. He then passionately said that his mother had done nothing to provoke his father and that even if she had, violence was never, ever a choice a man should make. That it is in the power of men to stop violence towards women. The moderator then asked “Do you want a hug?”

Sir Patrick didn’t even hesitate, he smiled, hopped off the stage and came over to embrace me in a hug. Which he held me there for a long while. He told me “You never have to go through that again, you’re safe now.” I couldn’t stop thanking him. His embrace was so warm and genuine. It was two people, two strangers, supporting and giving love. And when we pulled away he looked strait in my eyes, like he was promising that. He told me to take care. And I will.

Sir Patrick Stewart is an absolute roll model for men. He is an amazing man and was so kind and full of heart. I want to let everyone know to please find help if you are in a violent or abusive house hold or relationship. There are organizations and people ready to help. I had countless people after the panel thanking me for sharing the story and asking him those questions. Many said they went through similar things. You are not alone.

We played a show with Lightning Bolt in Santa Fe, NM in a Mexican restaurant. The show was kinda fucked cause the PA was half broken. The stage was a 1/3rd of the size it should have been. There were no monitors and not even a mixer for the half broke PA. There was doubts the show would happen at all with all these factors against it.

We tried to get food at the restaurant but were told it wasn’t open- despite a handful of afternoon drunks being in there getting their thing on. A horrible recommendation lead us to a New Mexican eatery down the way where I was suckered into paying $22 for three mediocre tacos :( She said we could trust the a la carte- NEVER TRUST THE A LA CARTE!

Our tour manager at the time, while clinically insane, was a great sound guy. He searched through the under regions of the rickety portable stage and found a decrepit C-DJ mixer and was able to route the entire show through that thing. Without any monitors or room for me in stage- I set up on the ground out front. Lightning Bolt set up on the far wall ready for when Purity Ring finished and somehow- the show ended up being on of the best nights of tour. A completely mixed crowd of crusty metal heads and local teenie boppers mixed in a hot mexican restaurant for a show that started an hour late and almost not at all.

I’d like to mention that the ‘green room’ was just the kitchen with a bowl of tortilla chips and salsa verde.

The Silver Scorpion [comic can be downloaded at this link], which features a disabled superhero as the main character, was inspired by American disabled students and their counterparts in Syria who collaborated about improving rights and freedoms for the disabled. Through their creativity, they have given the world a character that transcends these differences.

The image above is a cover/poster for the Silver Scorpion comic. It features a large image of the Syrian Silver Scorpion superhero, standing upright with his lower body in a silver, futuristic-looking device. At the base of the device is a smaller image of the same protagonist, pushing himself in a silver-and-red manual wheelchair. In the smaller image, he wears a mustard yellow shirt and blue jeans, and you can see that both of his legs have been amputated. One is amputated above the knee, the other ends right around the knee.

This rules.

I am unemployable because I cant spell and not like other people cant spell, English is my first and only language. I can’t explain it, it’s gotten better but its still there. Spell check and computers are helpfull but they often don’t work. And what about all thoughs times I need to fill out a form by hand. and what about all that extra time I spend using the spell check function of googleing words to compare the serch results with what I’m thinking. Hear are some words I resently could’nt soell in my working life I hope the BOSS dosent notice.

There are people close to me, people who understand. People who take extra time to make corections for me. They do it for a smile, a hug, a thank you. If it was not for these people I would never make it passed the cover letter and resume. “Who can’t spell” “they must be LAZY, SLOPY, and STUPID” I know this is what people think.

Perhaps they are just unable? unable to afford a computer, unable to work extra hard to read there work over and over agin checking duble checking and cross checking. Unable to finde people willing to help them. For all these people simple letters on a page are the reson they are unemployable. Luckaly I’m not really one of them. I’m good at passing. Good at pretending, good at casualy looking at my phone when really I’m franticly spell checking, but there is always a chance I’ll be discoverd. who cant spell?

- Here is a spotlight on another response to our video, UNemployABLE. This submission is by Vanessa Dion Fletcher, a multi-disciplinary Indigenous artist whose work is concerned with the estrangement from her ancestral languages because of a learning disability.

”I focus on ideas of fluency and understanding in the context of my Potawatomi and
Lenape ancestry. My interests in communication come from my lack of access to my indigenous languages (Potawatomi and Lenape) and as a person living with a learning disability caused by issues with short-term memory. Having no direct access to my ancestral Aboriginal languages has inspired me to explore the notion of communication without words. Through my artwork I am undertaking a process of recording or archiving in a way that is outside of the inescapable colonialism associated with only being able to speak English. My performance and two-dimensional works exist in a tension between action and output, where the definition of art vs. documentation are blurred.”

What does it mean to try and dance between all the obstacles set down in your path in the workplace? What does it mean to be sized up, squished down, squeezed in, and otherwise bent over to fit the expectations of co-workers, bosses, and clients? How much can one person twirl, and twirl, and twirl in an interview setting?

UNemployABLE - Contest Video Submission

Hey friends! A few of you have been sharing links to responses you’ve made to my video, thinking about what it means to be UNEMPLOYABLE. Shoutout to Birds Thatgo for their vid, raising questions about what is considered ‘legitimate’ employment. I think it’s totally key to keep in mind that just because you have a minimum wage coffee-slinging gig that keeps you afloat (like we both do, Birds) it doesn’t mean things are smooth-sailing. You are right when you say there are plenty of barriers that keep us from reaching ‘meaningful’ or ‘ethica’ employment.

So this video started going around my facebook today, with about a dozen of my female friends sharing the link with comments like, and “Everyone needs to see this”, and “All girls should watch this,” and “This made me cry.” And I’m not trying to shame those girls! Some where in Virginia we hit a huge line of traffic. Turns out a semi truck had caught on fire & crashed, blocking both directions of traffic. While we waited, we walked up and down the line of cars for a long while. Megan found some bones & a skull in the brush by the side of the road. She ended up making some jewelry from it.
